Description: Lurker (noun) - A member of an online community who observes, but does not actively participate. To many, exchanging 140 characters on Twitter seems like a pretty useless task. I was skeptical when I started reading teachers proclaim Twitter as the best professional development resource they've ever experienced. Once you learn who to follow and how to interpret the language (@, #, RT, DM, etc.), Twitter can become a constant source of new ideas to explore. This session is intended for teachers who have never tweeted or those who have a Twitter account, but still feel perplexed by this little bird. We will focus on the first stage of building a Personal Learning Network (PLN)... the observation stage (more commonly known as, a lurker).
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Build a PLN by searching, identifying, and following relevant Twitter users.
- Create a profile that will identify themselves as a member of an education community.
- Navigate the Twitter web & smartphone apps.
- Utilize hashtags to follow Twitter chats.
- Save and share resources found via Twitter.
To accomplish these objectives, participants will:
- Create a Twitter account & set up your profile (including your picture).
- Enter your Twitter "handle" (username) on this form.
- Follow each other from this list.
- Follow at least 10 educators from this list: 40 Educators to Follow
- Review their "Following" lists and follow at least 10 more educators.
- Our Twitter chat "hashtag" using TweetChat: #1sa02
- Questions are posted with a Q, followed by a number... answer with an A, followed by the corresponding number.
- Concept: 30-Day Challenge (read & find someone new to follow everyday for the next 30 days)
