Description: Thoughtful, formative assessments can have positive impact on improving student achievement. Formative assessments come in many forms from dip-sticking with thumbs up, to exit slips, brief quizzes, and collecting data on clipboards. The difficult part is collecting, sorting, and saving the data for instructional decisions. In this workshop, you will be introduced to some free, web-based tools that can be used in your classroom immediately.

What is a summative assessment?

A summative assessment asks, "Did the student acquire the intended knowledge and skills by the deadline - yes or no, pass or fail?"

What is a formative assessment?

A formative assessment asks, "Is the student learning it, and if not, what steps do we need to take to support their learning?"

  • Use the assessment to identify students who are not yet proficient on a particular skill or concept.
  • Require those students to keep working on that skill or concept in a structured school-wide intervention program that is timely, directive, ans systematic.
  • Use the assessment to improve student learning and keep working on the concept until they demonstrate proficiency.
