Literacy as Thinking: Inquiry in Secondary Classrooms

Page history last edited by np@mailinator.com 10 years, 5 months ago

Description: Literacy is defined in PISA (International Benchmarking Assessment) as the ability to understand, use and reflect on written texts in order to achieve one’s goals, to develop one’s knowledge and potential, and to participate effectively in society. This definition goes beyond the notion that literacy means decoding written material and literal comprehension. Students are expected to demonstrate their proficiency in retrieving information, understanding texts at a general level, interpreting them, reflecting on the content and form of texts in relation to their own knowledge of the world, and evaluating and arguing their point of view. Inquiry is defined as a systematic investigation often of a matter of public interest, it seems appropriate that student and teacher questions can drive literacy development. We will explore practical ways to do just that in a variety of settings across our students' school day.
