Teaching with Video (YouTube-Moodle)


Description: Teachers have been using video in classrooms for years. As technology changes, so do the teaching strategies. Short, online video clips can help connect your lessons with today's YouTube generation. Learn how teachers can access YouTube at school and transfer videos to SchoolTube, allowing students to view teacher selected videos online. Participants will also learn how to embed videos in Moodle courses.

1. Internet Authentication... Accessing YouTube: YouTube is a wealth of information, but blocked by most school districts because it also contains a lot of inappropriate material. The Internet Authentication tool allows teachers to bypass the filter and view websites (like YouTube). With this tool, teachers can use their classroom computers and LCD projectors to display subject-related videos from YouTube.

 

 

2. Quietube... YouTube (without the distractions): You may have found an appropriate video clip to show your class on YouTube, but you never know what is going to appear in the advertisements or "related videos" section. Even if this extra content is appropriate for students, it can be very distracting. When showing YouTube videos to your students, you may want to use a service called Quietube. It removes all of the distractions on the YouTube page and leaves only the video.

3. TubeChop... Trim YouTube Videos: One of the drawbacks of using VHS or DVDs is finding the segment you want students to watch in the middle of the full-length video. YouTube videos can pose the same problems. Wouldn't it be great if you could quickly "trim" the beginning and end of the video and only show a specific segment? TubeChop is the tool you need.

 

 

4. Online-Convert.com... Download YouTube Videos: Why would anyone want to download a YouTube video? There are several reasons, but the two most popular for teachers: (1) to insert the video in a PowerPoint presentation, (2) to allow students to view the video at school on Moodle. Online-Convert.com provides a free service for downloading and converting a wide variety of file formats (including YouTube videos).

 

 

5. SchoolTube... Transfer YouTube Videos to an Unblocked Website: YouTube is not the only video service on the Internet; there are a number of websites not blocked by our district's filter (Vimeo, Blip.tv, TeacherTube, DiscoveryStreaming, etc.). Unfortunately, many videos can only be found on YouTube. In the tutorials listed above, you have learned several ways to show YouTube clips to students with an LCD projector. If you want students to view videos online at school, your only option (until now) has been to download the video and upload it back to Moodle. Let SchoolTube do the downloading, converting, and hosting for you.

 

 

6. Moodle... Embed Video Content in Your Course Page: When used effectively, videos can help students understand concepts visually. On a computer, students have the ability to pause, rewind, and review videos at their own pace. Combine this with the assignment features in Moodle and you have a very powerful teaching and learning tool.
